Written by Sally Guo Updated Jul. 1, 2021

As an international metropolis, there are countless restaurants in Beijing catering to everyone's different tastes, beliefs, and budgets. Muslims can find many halal food options in various Muslim restaurants. Even if you are not Muslim but like mutton or beef, you will have an enjoyable dining experience at Muslim restaurants, too.

1. Hongbinlou Restaurant

Originally founded in 1853 during the Qing Dynasty, Hongbinlou Restaurant is a time-honored Muslim restaurant and stands out for its many distinguished visitors, such as the former Chinese leader Zhou Enlai and the leader of Iran Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei. It is regarded as the best Muslim restaurant in Beijing.

If you want to taste halal Peking duck in Beijing, try this one! It is good for the roast duck and braised oxtail.

2. Kaorouwan (Nanlishi Branch)

Originally founded in 1686 during the Qing Dynasty, Kaorouwan is the first restaurant that provides a barbecue in Beijing. It is known for its specialties of barbecue beef and sesame cake. The barbecue beef is as tender as bean curd. Even many art masters such as Zhang Daqian, Mei Lanfang, Ma Lianliang, Qi Baishi, etc. are frequent callers here.

3. Kaorouji (Houhai Branch)

Like Kaorouwan which we listed above, Kaorouji is one of the oldest halal barbecue restaurants in Beijing. It is famous for its signature barbecue lamb – you can only go there and taste it for yourself to know how good it is.

Adjoining the Houhai, Kaorouji has a very good location. It is easily accessible by subway (Shichahai Station, Line 8) and is located right on Qianhai Lake. It's nice to be able to go for a lakeside stroll after dinner.

4. Donglaishun Restaurant (Wangfujing Branch)

Donglaishun Restaurant is one of the most historical spots for hot pot, and its selection of meats is excellent. Its sliced mutton is extremely thin and even; it is tasty but not greasy. Apart from instant-boiled mutton, other halal dishes like fried mutton fillet in sweet sauce, and boiled mutton are also attractive.

5. Xilaishun Restaurant

Founded in the early 20th century, Xilaishun Restaurant is decorated in a traditional Islamic style with an arch-style gate. Unlike Donglaishun’s saute and roast skills, halal dishes in Xilaishun are more exquisite and pure. It blends the advantages of Chinese and Western food, and specializes in roast duck, hot pot, garlic flavor barbecue lamb, etc.

6. Baikuilaohao Restaurant (Jiaodaokou Branch)

Founded in 1780 during the Qing Dynasty, Baikuilaohao Restaurant is a time-honored and well-known Muslim restaurant in Beijing. It has three branches in town. They sell quite a variety of halal food, the barbecue lamb and fried mutton fillet in sweet sauce (它似蜜) are the best. In addition, the price is very cheap!
