Harbin Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral

Harbin Sacred Heart of Jesus is located in the centre of Harbin City. The predecessor of the church is the St Stanislav Church. The church was a Christianity church built by Polish foreign residents. The church is a typical Gothic architecture.

There are three cathedrals near the Eastern Dazhi Road and the Anshan Road. They are Protection of the Virgin Church (圣母守护教堂) and the Protestant Church of Nangang District (尼埃拉依教堂) and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral is right the opposite side of the two churches. It is worth to mention that the Harbin Sacred Heart of athedral is the only cathedral equipped with air-condition. It brings warmth to visitors and the local god believers.

History

In the early 20th century, there were more three thousand Polish immigrants taking part in the construction of the Middle East Railway. Most of them were Catholic. In 1906, Polish Catholics raised money to build the Department of tanis Ralph church in the East Dazhijie Street of Nangang District in Harbin and was finished in 1907.

Two years later, the cathedral was managed by Priest Wu Wenhua and had Poland Middle School and Poland Immigrant Dormitory as the attached institution containing 2000 believers of religion. In 1918, it was registered in St.Petersburg in Russia and the power to conduct the church conveyed to the Priest Vladivostok. In 1934, it belonged to Jilin region destrict.

In 1959, the Chinese patriotic Catholic association of Heilongjiang Province merged the region districts and the cathedral was set in the Poland's Catholic Church on East Dazhijie Road. In 1966, the church was occupied to be a school because of the Great Cultural Revolution. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral was reconstructed in 2004 and now is the biggest Christianity Church in Heilongjiang Province. The tolly of the church is 51.6 meters high.

Harbin is very rich in churches. St. Sofia Orthodox Church is located on Sophia Square, which is one of the grandest constructions in Harbin. Visitors can see many pigeons walking on the square with the music fountains on the square as well. Because Harbin is located in the very north of China, it makes the city a good place to ski. Yabuli Ski Resort is popular with the ski lovers. The ice engraving and the snow sculpture is a big highlight in Harbin. In winter, visitors can go to the Snow Sculpture on the Sun Island and also can see the Ice Lantern Show lasting from January 5 to the end of next February.
