April is one of the nicest months to visit Hong Kong. The weather is warm, but not oppresively so. The rain begins to pick up, more than doubling what it was in March, unfortunately. However, in the first part of the month, visitors can expect clear skies and mild balmy weather.

What to wear in Hong Kong in April?

Rain Gear- Again

After a beautiful respite from the wet weather in winter, the rain is back in force. Bring an umbrella, waterproof jacket or poncho, or at least clothes that dry quickly.

If you plan on spending a lot of time outside, either in the outdoors or exploring the city, waterproof boots are a must.

General-Purpose Warm Weather Clothes

When it isn’t a torrential downpour, you should bring some comfortable t-shirts, shorts, and sandals/flipflops. The weather will be warm in April, and will become to stifling in the last days/weeks of the month.

Is April a good time to visit Hong Kong?

April is considered one of the best months to visit, so remember to plan everything in advance. Book your tickets in and out of the city, whether by plane, train, or even bus as far in-advance as you can. It’s also a good idea to plan out your accommodation beforehand as well. Room prices skyrocket during the month of April.

It’s not just the weather either, April has a ton of cultural holidays that tourists from all over the world come to see.

Finally, if you plan on visiting Hong Kong in April, be sure to check the weather often before you trip. Although Typhoons are still relatively uncommon in April, they are becoming more and more frequent as the world climate heats up.

However, if you do make it in April, Hong Kong is great. There are many cultural holidays complete with special food, dragon dances, and more.

It’s also a good time to hit the beach, the weather is warm and sunny (if it isn’training), and the ocean temperature is warm and inviting.

Be careful in the last few days of the month though, as it’s not uncommon for Hong Kong have consistent downpours and/or sweltering subtropical heat and humidity.

Qing Ming Festival (Tombsweeping)

Location: City-Wide

Celebrated all over China, Qing Ming Festival is a tradition with a long history. Honoring their ancestors, Chinese people go to their family burial places to clean and decorate the tombs of their progenitors.

Qing Ming is a sight to behold as joss sticks and incense are burned, and offerings of food are left for the ghosts of the departed.

Tin Hau (Fisherman’s Festival)

Date: 15, April, 2020

Location: Tin Hau Temples across Hong Kong, mainly the Tin Hau Temple in Causeway Bay

Tin Hau is the Goddess of the Sea, and also the protector of fishermen. Her worship and her temples stem from Taoism.

An important festival for a port city, on Tin Hau hundreds of boats, decorated with streamers, flags and more make their way to and from the various Tin Hau temples in the city to ask the ocean goddess for good fortune.

Remember, most traditional festivals are based on the lunar calendar, so sometimes festivals will switch dates between April and May- be sure to check before your trip what festivals will be happening when you are there.
