Hong Kong Weather in August

Written by ivana Updated Jun. 11, 2021

August is Hong Kong’s rainiest month, and one of its hottest. This makes for a pretty bad combination for visiting for most people. However, if you find yourself coming to Hong Kong for whatever reason, the following guide can help you plan your trip.

Averages for Hong Kong Weather in August

Is August a good time to visit Hong Kong?

May through September are typhoon season, although typhoons are less common in August, they are still common enough to warrant careful assessment of the weather. Fortunately, August sees less typhoons than September, but still sees its fair share.

Particularly if you are flying in/out of Hong Kong, you should keep up to date on weather to find out if your flight is delayed or even canceled.

On clear days, it is possible to enjoy the outdoors, but make sure to take the appropriate clothes for the extreme heat, humidity and sun. Additionally, Hong Kong has a good deal of activities to do through the summer months as well, particularly in August.

What to wear in Hong Kong in August?

Rain, Heat and Sun Gear

As one of the hottest months with the most sunlight, the risk of heatstroke and heat exhaustion is high for any outdoors activity- even activities near urban centers, like visiting Disney Land or heading to the top of Victoria peak.

Ideally, you will want to bring a light jacket that blocks UV and either is water-resistant or at least dries quickly- you will be soaked with sweat if not rain after a few minutes outside. Don’t forget a hat, sunblock, and deodorant.

Plenty of Changes of Clothes

Plenty of changes of clothes are also necessary in this weather. Maybe when traveling, some people can wear the same clothes several days in a row, but not in this weather. You will want a new t-shirt every day, and most likely you will need new shorts/trousers to wear every day as well. Quick-dry clothes or cotton clothes that absorb moisture will be your best friends on a trip to Hong Kong in August.
