Is July a good time to visit Hong Kong?

Generally, July is regarded as one of the worst months to visit Hong Kong. Typhoon season (which is at it’s most active in September), is beginning to pick up, and the weather is wet and wild. If you like doing outdoors activities like sailing, hiking, cycling, etc., then July isn’t for you in Hong Kong.

If you find yourself visiting in July, make sure to check the weather carefully before your arrival and departure. If you fly in, you may have to deal with flight delays/cancellations on account of the weather. Even ferries/cruises to and from the rest of Asia/the mainland of china might be delayed or have their plans changed.

What to wear in Hong Kong in July?

Rain Gear

Bring a rain jacket, hat, water-resistant shoes, and umbrella. If you have luggage you need to bring outside, then you should make sure that it has a rain cover, or is water resistant.

Plenty of Changes of Clothes

During this humid, sweltering season, be sure to bring a lot of different things. Your clothes will be soaked with either rain, humidity, or sweat at the end of each day. Don’t forget deodorant/antiperspirant.

Bring cotton t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sandals, the usual stuff for tolerating heat and humidity. Don’t forget to always have plenty of water. July weather in Hong Kong will leave you soaked in sweat after just a few minutes of being outside.

Other Protection from the Elements

Sunscreen, mosquito spray (dengue fever mosquitoes are a real threat in Hong Kong), and a hat for the sun are good ideas if you find a sunny day to go to the beach/do something outdoors.

Things to do in July in Hong Kong

Visiting the beach is a great idea in July- if you can find a day or two of nice weather. You can comfortably swim and sunbathe on the beach, but make sure there is somewhere to take cover nearby if it suddenly rains.

Mostly though, July is indoor season in Hong Kong, and there is a lot to do indoors there.  Shopping, find dining, and more- the usual kinds of things that people like to do in Hong Kong.
